Email Trace

This feature allows you to review details about email delivery attempts for your account. You can also trace an email's delivery route using this feature. These can be useful for locating problems with email delivery.


Search for the delivery status of an email

To see the delivery status of an email:

  1. Enter a recipient email address in the search box.
  2. Click Run Report to show the Delivery Report table and the Email Server Trace diagram.


The Delivery Report table

By default, results for your query are sorted into the following columns:

Event This column contains an icon that indicates the message's delivery status:
  • success — The message was delivered successfully.
  • unknown — The message's status is unknown, or delivery is in progress.
  • deferred — The message was deferred.
  • error — The message encountered a delivery error.
  • blacklist.jpg — The message was rejected at SMTP time. This typically occurs because the sender's server is configured insecurely or listed on a RBL.
  • filtered — The mail server accepted the message but did not deliver it to the recipient's inbox. This typically occurs because the message was filtered by spam software.
User The cPanel user who owns the email account that send the message.
Sender The email address on your system that sent the message.
Sent Time The date and time the message was sent.
Spam Score A score based on the number of spam-related traits found within the message.
Recipient The email address to which the message was sent.
ID The unique identifier for the outgoing email message.
Result This column contains a short message about the delivery.
Actions Clicking the magnifying glass icon allows you view and print information about the selected message. This information includes the message's sender, recipient, username, and more.

The Table Options button

You can select the columns you wish to display in the Delivery Report table by clicking the options icon () on the right. To hide information, de-select the checkbox.

From the Table Options window, you can choose to view the following column headers:

Event The delivery status, indicated by an icon.
User The sender's cPanel username.
Domain The sender's domain.
Sender The email address on your system that sent the message.
Sent Time The date and time the message was sent.
Sender Host The sender's host's IP address.
Sender IP The sender's IP address.
Authentication The sender's authentication type.
Spam Score The email's SpamAssassin score.
Recipient The email address to which the message was sent.
Delivery User The username that owns the recipient's email address.
Delivery Domain The recipient's domain.
Delivered To The recipient's email address.
Router The internal router used by the mail server to determine the message's destination.
Transport The recipient's SMTP type.
Out Time The date and time the message was received by the intended recipient.
ID The unique identifier for the outgoing email message.
Delivery Host The recipient mail exchanger's hostname.
Delivery IP The recipient mail exchanger's IP address.
Size The size of the outgoing message.
Result This column contains a message describing the delivery results.
Actions Clicking on the magnifying glass on this column opens the Delivery Event Details information window and allows you to print the report.


The Email Server Trace diagram

This feature will show the delivery route that the sent email took from web server to server. There are 4 icons under the Legend with their corresponding meanings. The icons will show you what error, filter, destination, or local mailbox was encountered while your email was en route.
